Sipi Tangwen Fermentation

Sipi Tangwen is a specialty Arabica coffee produced by smallholder farmers in the Tangwen community on Mount Elgon. This lot is washed with an extended 92-hour fermentation, a controlled process that allows fermentation to influence the coffee's flavour development before the beans are washed and dried. The result is a clean yet expressive cup with notes of strawberry, dark chocolate and caramel. Similar Tangwen lots are produced at around 1,900–2,050 metres and are recognised for their high quality.

Tangwen lies in the Sipi region on the slopes of Mount Elgon, where Arabica coffee is grown at high elevations in rich volcanic soils. The area receives plentiful rainfall and benefits from the cool conditions created by the mountain's elevation. Tangwen is a smallholder farming community, and its coffees have gained attention for their quality as investment in specialty processing and direct relationships with farmers has increased in the region.

Uganda is the natural home of Robusta coffee, which grows wild around the Lake Victoria basin and has been part of local life for centuries. Arabica arrived later, with the first introductions at Mount Elgon dating to the early 20th century; Arabica was being established in the Bugisu area by around 1912. The cool, high-altitude slopes of Mount Elgon proved particularly well suited to Arabica, and the region developed a strong reputation for washed coffees. Today, Uganda remains a major coffee-producing country, with Mount Elgon representing one of its most important Arabica-growing areas.
