Sipi Tangwen

Sipi Tangwen is a specialty Arabica coffee produced by smallholder farmers in the Tangwen community. The cherries undergo a 72-hour anaerobic fermentation before being dried whole, a process that encourages pronounced fruit character while retaining the sweetness of the natural process. This lot presents notes of guava, tropical fruit and plum, creating an expressive and fruit-forward cup.

Tangwen is located in the Sipi subregion on the slopes of Mount Elgon, where smallholder farmers grow Arabica at approximately 1,900–2,050 metres above sea level. The area's high elevation, volcanic soils and cool mountain climate provide favourable conditions for producing complex coffees. Tangwen farmers work with Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, with premiums from coffee purchases supporting community projects including education, clean water and farmer training.

Uganda is home to wild Robusta coffee, which has been part of local communities' lives for centuries. Arabica was introduced around 1900, with varieties arriving from Malawi and Tanzania, and cultivation later expanded into the highlands of Mount Elgon. By the 1930s, Arabica production around Mount Elgon had developed significantly, supported by cooperatives and processing facilities. Today, Mount Elgon remains one of Uganda's most important Arabica-growing regions, while coffee continues to play a major role in the country's agricultural economy.
