About this coffee

Imbalu is a specialty Arabica coffee produced on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda by The Coffee Yard in partnership with 578 smallholder farmers. Grown at high elevations in fertile volcanic soils, this coffee reflects the unique terroir of the Mount Elgon region. The cup is typically characterised by a balanced sweetness, bright citrus acidity, and notes of stone fruit, chocolate, and caramel, resulting in a clean and approachable profile that highlights the quality potential of Ugandan Arabica coffee.

The region

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano that straddles the border between Uganda and Kenya and is one of East Africa’s most important coffee growing regions. Coffee is cultivated at elevations ranging from approximately 1,200 to over 2,200 metres above sea level, where rich volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and cool temperatures create ideal growing conditions. The region’s high altitude allows coffee cherries to mature slowly, producing beans with greater density, sweetness, and complexity. Mount Elgon has become internationally recognised for producing some of Uganda’s finest specialty coffees.

History of coffee in UGANDA

Coffee has played a vital role in Uganda’s economy and culture for more than a century. While the country is home to indigenous Robusta coffee, Arabica coffee was introduced during the early 1900s and found ideal growing conditions in the highlands of Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains. Over time, Uganda developed into one of Africa’s leading coffee producers, with smallholder farmers responsible for the vast majority of production. Today, the country’s specialty coffee sector continues to grow, earning recognition for high quality Arabica coffees that showcase Uganda’s diverse landscapes and rich coffee heritage.
