Karambi

Karambi is a washed specialty coffee produced by smallholder farmers and processed at Karambi Washing Station in the Nyamasheke District of western Rwanda. Through the washed process, the coffee cherries are carefully pulped, fermented, and washed before drying, resulting in a clean and expressive cup profile. Coffees from Karambi are often celebrated for their bright acidity, refined sweetness, and notes of citrus, stone fruit, and tea like florals, showcasing the elegance and clarity for which Rwandan washed coffees are known. 

Karambi is located in the Nyamasheke District, a renowned coffee growing region in Rwanda's Western Province. Situated near the shores of Lake Kivu, the area benefits from high elevations, rich volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and moderate temperatures that create ideal conditions for cultivating high quality Arabica coffee. These favourable environmental conditions allow coffee cherries to ripen slowly, developing the complexity, sweetness, and vibrant acidity that have earned Nyamasheke international recognition as one of Rwanda's premier coffee producing regions. 

Coffee was introduced to Rwanda by German missionaries and colonial administrators in the early 1900s and later expanded under Belgian rule. While coffee production initially focused on quantity rather than quality, significant investment following the early 2000s transformed the industry through the establishment of washing stations and improved processing practices. Today, Rwanda is widely respected in the specialty coffee sector for its high quality washed Arabica coffees, with smallholder farmers playing a central role in producing coffees known for their cleanliness, balance, and distinctive fruit forward character.
