About This Farm

This AA-grade, washed process coffee is from the Ruiru Mills estate, is now one of 6 estates owned and operated by Sasini, a publicly listed company with a majority Kenyan ownership.

Sasini’s estates have long placed an emphasis on equity and community. In the case of the estates’ workers this involves the provision of living quarters, early child education, union membership and guaranteed payment above minimum wage.

History of Kenyan Coffee

Coffee likely grew wild in Kenya long before anyone thought to farm it—hidden in dense forests or right out in the open. But it wasn’t until 1895 that missionaries brought seeds from Réunion Island and began growing coffee commercially.

Those 100 seeds, carried by the “Holy Ghost Fathers,” arrived by train and were planted just outside what would become Nairobi. Years later, the Scott Agricultural Laboratories—named after early missionary Dr. Henry Scott—selected varieties that would go on to define Kenyan coffee.

That’s where the “SL” in SL28 comes from.
