About this coffee

Bulaago is a naturally processed Arabica coffee from the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. It is grown at altitudes between 1,900 and 2,100 metres above sea level. The coffee is produced by smallholder farmers in the Bulaago region and processed at the Zukuka Bora washing station. The natural processing method involves drying the cherries on raised beds, which imparts distinctive fruity flavours.

Tasting notes include red apple, golden raisin, white chocolate, dates, and a hint of orange marmalade.

The region

The Bulaago region is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Elgon, a dormant volcano on the border between Uganda and Kenya. The area is characterised by high altitudes, rich volcanic soils, and a favourable climate for coffee cultivation. Smallholder farmers in the region contribute to the production of high-quality Arabica coffee. The Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, established by the NGO JENGA, works closely with these farmers to improve coffee quality and provide social benefits to the community.

History of coffee in Uganda

Coffee is Uganda's top-earning export crop. The country is one of the few in the world with indigenous coffee, with Robusta coffee growing wild around Lake Victoria. Coffee cultivation in Uganda began in the early 20th century, and by the 1980s, it had become the country's most important cash crop. The Uganda Coffee Development Authority was formed in 1991 to oversee and promote coffee production. Today, Uganda is known for both Robusta and Arabica coffee, with initiatives like Zukuka Bora aiming to enhance the quality and sustainability of coffee farming in regions like Bulaago.
